Re:Moving out of the Residential and Greek Commons
March 11, 2020
In an effort to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus to our community and in the important interest of public health, we are requiring all undergraduate students in Rensselaer Residential and Greek Commons to move out of these residences by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2020.
To facilitate this transition, we will extend Spring Break through March 20, 2020. Spring semester classes will resume with remote instruction on March 23, 2020.
In order to limit the number of students on campus to ensure social distancing, students returning from break should schedule their move out beginning Thursday, March 12 through Friday, March 20 by filling out the Residential Move-Out Preference Form online at:
Rensselaer will review requests from students wishing to remain on campus due to extenuating circumstances that may, for example, relate to their inability to return home due to restrictions created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Such exemptions will be very limited. To submit a residential petition, visit: https://rensselaerpolytechnicinstitute.formstack.com/forms/residential_petition
All petitions must be submitted by Saturday, March 14 by 5:00 p.m., EDT. Petitions will be reviewed and students will be notified about their request via their RPI email account.
The Institute is prepared to provide assistance in helping to obtain moving and storage facilities to any student who wants to leave personal belongings in Troy. More details will be posted on those resources shortly. We appreciate your flexibility as the Division of Student Life assists you with this transition.
Please be advised, we are taking this action to protect the health, safety, and well-being of the entire Rensselaer community and are following the public health guidance of local, state, and federal resources which encourage colleges and universities to reduce the density of campuses through social distancing. We also took into consideration similar steps taken by peer institutions. As a result, we are doing our part to reduce the spread of the virus in our community. We all play a critical role in protecting our community and we ask for your collaboration during this time. We look forward to supporting you and finding creative solutions to enable you to thrive academically.
