Making a Referral to a Dean of Students Office & Student Support Deans

As a faculty member you may make observations in the classroom, via email, or in advising meetings that indicate a student is in need of support to be successful. Sometimes their concerns are more complex than a simple referral or the problem makes it unclear where to begin. These can include personal concerns, financial concerns, parent/family issues, mental health concerns. In all these instances you may make a referral to an undergraduate class dean. A student's assigned Student Support Dean is listed on their Degree Works.

Student Support Deans are a friendly and accessible resource for support, referrals, and guidance. When you're unsure where to start, start with a Student Support Dean. We assist with academic and personal concerns, offering advice and connecting you with the right campus resources.

With strong relationships across RPI, we advocate on your behalf with faculty and campus offices to help you stay on track. If you're considering a leave of absence, we’ll help you plan your time away and your return.

Specific roles of the Dean's include:

  • Academic and personal mentoring
  • Class-specific programs organized through Cohort Committees
  • Coordination with campus departments and offices
  • Managing administrative processes such as excused absences, no exam grade requests, course withdrawals, leaves of absence, and readmissions

The Student Support Deans often intervene with students experiencing personal or academic difficulty through the Electronic Warning System (EWS) and provide intrusive academic and social intervention and support.
