Department Review Milestones

Milestones

SLAC has divided the twelve standards into six milestones to simplify the program review process. Each milestone will have an assigned deadline, which helps maintain timeframes for this process.

Required Milestones

  • Milestone 1: Mission Review, Program
  • Milestone 2: Organizational Leadership, Assessment
  • Milestone 3: Diversity, Equity, and Access

Recommended Milestones

  • Milestone 3:Human Resources; Ethics, Law, Policy, And Governance
  • Milestone 4: Internal & External Relations
  • Milestone 5: Financial Resources & Technology
  • Milestone 6: Facilities & Equipment

Reporting for each milestone will be completed digitally via AEFIS. Each unit will be provided a Box folder to upload Milestone data. All staff in the unit will be provided view access unless otherwise requested by the Director of the unit. The Program Review Lead and the Director will have access to edit the folder contents. Units are only able to view the content in their folder and data will not be shared with other units. Data will be available for all SLAC Committee members to view and comment for feedback purposes.

At the close of Milestone 2/6, the unit will have completed the program review process for at least one area. Some departments only have one possible area to review, others have multiple areas to review and will only complete one review per cycle. The second year of the program review process will involve developing an action plan based on what you have learned and working with a SLAC member to implement this plan. The unit will come back to the program review process for this area after 1-3 years, depending on how many units are within the Portfolio.

The action plan will address any areas which need improvement to meet the CAS standards. CAS has an action plan resource to help develop the action plan, found here: https://www.cas.edu/findings. A SLAC member will provide support during the development of the action plan, and it will include development of SMART goals. “SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.” (citation: https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/knowledge/other/smart-goal/). Goals are meant to be achievable and realistic, not put an additional burden on the unit, and the assigned SLAC member will provide support to develop these goals.
