About the Bridge Mentor Process

Be the difference for a new student and support the transition to calculus, physics and computer science. Consider giving back to students in this unique program during the summer months as they get a jump start on Calculus, Physics, and Computer Science all while meeting friends and getting excited about Rensselaer. Please read carefully below about the two distinct paths to becoming a Bridge Scholar Mentor for the Summer of 2024.

Bridge Scholars Mentors

Successful Bridge Scholars Subject Mentor applicants:

  • A passion for supporting incoming first-year students to Rensselaer;
  • A 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher preferred; 
  • A letter grade of A in either Calculus I, Physics I, Computer Science I (or AP equivalent);
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff;
  • Capacity for discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality;
  • Demonstrated record of leadership, maturity, academic excellence and resourcefulness;
  • Deep knowledge of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute including the academic support systems, registration processes and policies, and how to navigate academic departments; 
  • Prior experience in a peer advising role such as a Math Mentor, Physics Mentor, Resident Assistant, Learning Assistant, Orientation Advisor, women’s mentor or tutor is preferred, but not required.

 

Mentor Commitment:

  • Move onto campus no later than 12:00pm (noon) June 30th
  • Training: Monday, July 1st – July 6th
  • Residential program: Sunday, July 7th – Saturday, July 20th .
    • Reside on campus, every night until the conclusion on the Residential Program on July 22nd.
    • Work with Bridge professional faculty and staff during academic classes, transitional workshops, evening study hours, and weekend activities.
  • On-line course daily support: Monday, July 22nd – Friday, August 16th nightly log-on for 3 days per week to the start of the fall semester and stay in contact with faculty.

 

Mentor Responsibilities: 

  • Welcome new students and families at check-in.
  • Respond to needs and concerns as they arise.
  • Participate in discussions for students and parents.
  • Responsible for effective, efficient, administrative office functions.
  • Be available to answer questions and give support.
  • Work with Bridge professional faculty and staff during academic classes, transitional workshops, evening study hours, and weekend activities.

 

Mentor Compensation: 

  • Housing and meals during the residential program
  • Gross pay: $3,000.00 stipend
  • Bridge branded materials, backpacks, planners, etc.

 

The application for Summer 2024 is currently available online. The application deadline is Sunday, January 21, 2024.

  • Success Mentors will be assigned a group of 15-20 students. 
  • Supervision meeting for online course: weekly supervision meeting during online component to touch base with success deans. 

 

Mentor Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with Success Lab sessions and work with closely with Success Deans 
  • Welcome new students and families at check-in.
  • Respond to needs and concerns as they arise
  • Participate in discussions for students and parents
  • Responsible for effective, efficient, administrative office functions.
  • Be available to answer questions and give support.
  • Lead Becoming a Master Student Sessions - Do work together 
  • Lead mental Floss activities 
  • Lead icebreaker activities 
  • Outing assistance 
  • Lead & support workshops & presentations

 

Mentor Compensation: 

  • Housing and meals during the residential program and training
  • Gross pay: $3,000.00 stipend
