Leaves of Absence

The first step in this process is to contact your Class Dean to discuss your separation from Rensselaer. This may be a difficult time for you, and your Class Dean is poised to support you as you navigate your choices surrounding a leave of absence (LOA). Regardless of the reason for the LOA request, all students must meet with their Class Dean before their request can be processed.

Students who wish to spend a period of time away from Rensselaer may request a LOA. In order to be considered for a leave, undergraduate students must complete the necessary paperwork from the Office for Student Success, and meet with their Undergraduate Class Dean stating the reasons for the request and the length of leave desired. These leaves are normally given for up to one year. For financial aid purposes only, a leave of absence is limited. Once the allowable period of time has expired, students are considered to have withdrawn from Rensselaer.

Leaves are intended for students who are pursuing unique experiences, need time for medical or psychological treatment, have personal/family obligations, have financial concerns, or have other reasons which necessitate an interruption in study. This decision should be made in consultation with your Undergraduate Class Dean, adviser, and family.
